June Favorites ♡ Twenty Thirteen

01. Object: My sparkly Hamlet Skull, duh.

Makeup

02. Mac's Antiqued Eyeshadow- (bottom corner shadow near my thumb) This is a beautiful deep copper shadow that I've been loving on my lash line right now. I like to smudge it in with my Mac 219 brush- it gives a nice smokey affect, but the color isn't so deep where it looks like I have a black eye! It's really pretty for everyday, and gives a little originality to any eye look.

03. Stila's Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner in Starfish- This is a pretty peuter gray with a green tinge that's perfect eyeliner for the beach or pool. It's not black, which I like for summer time, and it's waterproof! Lovely product. (Swatched on top)

04. Urban Decays 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Electric- I love popping this bright electric liner on my lower lash line for creating a fun summer makeup look. Really gorgeous blue color and it lasts! (Swatched underneath Starfish)

05. Laura Mercier's Blush in Lush Nectarine- I have been absolutely obsessed with this blush all month! It's a gorgeous pinky-coral that's one of my favorites for Spring and Summer. I've literally used this every day since the beginning of June, and highly recommend it if you're looking for a pinky-coral blush!

06. Mac's Cremecup Lipstick- One of my staples. I've been reaching for this a lot this month, it's just a nice bright bubble gum pink that is extremely wearable. This is a great Mac Lipstick to purchase if you're just getting into makeup, you'll find yourself using it a ton!

07. NYX's Lip Gloss in African Queen- This lip product is absolutely amazing. Imagine Mac's Rebel Lipstick in gloss form. That's this lip gloss, essentially. It's highly pigmented, super bold, and gorgeous for a nice purple/pink/magenta summer lip. The only con would have to be is that it is a bit sticky in consistency, however, that's something that can be overlooked when seeing the color and wear of this lip gloss. One of my all time favorites.

Swatches:

Beauty

08. Not Your Mother's She's a Tease Hairspray- I'll admit, I hated this product when I first bought it. It did a great job of acting as a hairspray, I just couldn't stand the scent. Honestly though, I didn't want to waste it, so I just kept using it and ironically, the scent grew on me. It's overall a pretty good hairspray, and I've been using it a lot lately, just a warning that the scent is pretty acquired!

09. Mac's Brush Cleanser- This product is brilliant for spot cleaning, but that's about it. It does just as good of a job as baby shampoo does for cleaning your makeup brushes, so in essence, it's not a product worth the money, per se. I decided, however, to throw it into my favorites because I've been spot cleaning my brushes a lot recently, and this does the trick just perfectly. It's a little difficult to spot clean brushes with baby shampoo (too sticky), so I'd opt for this one.

10. Gilly Hick's Perfume in Brisbane Gold- Ahhhhh!! I love this stuff. Miss Lilly actually introduced this to me! All year, I've been stealing her Gilly Hicks perfume on occasions when we'd be getting ready to go out, but I'm sure she's as happy as I am that I finally got a bottle of my own. I love this scent  for it's not sweet, it's really cologne-like. I personally have always preferred perfumes that smell more like cologne then perfume, so I'm all about this one. It's similar to the Abercrombie perfumes, (Gilly Hicks is owned by the same company that owns Abercrombie and Hollister) however, I find it to be a more mature and sophisticated scent.

Accessories/ Fashion

11. These hair ties are like the new thing! The ones I personally have (above) were made by Miss Lindsey, so I've never actually purchased them, but I know they're sold just about anywhere! Again though, their easy to make- you just have to buy the colored elastic!

12. Favorite accessory/trend: Flower Crowns. How cliché of me. However, they're pretty and I appreciate the romanticism.

13. Instas- Chalk "You're Beautiful" @ Lolita's- Beach @ Fire Island- Vivian Beaumont @ Lincoln Center- Lookbook photography (Collab with Lindz)

When it comes to the past, everyone writes fiction ♡

On Stephen King

[Taken from Google Images]

Today, I'm doing a bit of a different post than I have been doing recently. [aka, y'all have been bombarded by my makeup and beauty enthusiasm;)] I decided that I'll be doing occasional book reviews (sans spoilers) on mainly mysteries, Shakespeare texts, and horror books.

But, I'm not talking about Nancy Drew, per se.

Confession: I grew up watching Agatha Christie WLIW programs. Mainly, Hercule Poirot and occasionally Miss Marple. I also grew up religiously watching the slapstick comedy of Abbott and Costello (I can just about recite to you many of their routines at the back of my hand). And thus, my love for mysteries was born. So- when I delved into the horror genre more deeply as a teen, I was immediately drawn to Stephen King's Hard Case Crime novels.

I can probably write about my love for Stephen King for about twenty full length pages, but in short, I have never come across a piece of his writing that I don't adore. I have found myself connecting so deeply with many of his characters, their emotions, relationships- literally everything about some of them. Plus, he's just an incredible horror writer.
But I digress >>(as usual-- but look out for a 'why I love Stephen King explanation post' soon)

I just recently finished Stephen King's new Hard Case Crime novel, Joyland.

The story begins it's tale in New Hampshire, and moves to North Carolina-- following the young and naive Devin Jones who decides to take a job at an amusement park, Joyland, after his heart-wrenching, painful break-up with the almost love of his life, Wendy Keegan. >>>Okay, so it wasn't that painful or heartbreaking to the reader, but poor Devin seemed pretty crushed....
Long story short, he meets a nutty psychic who tells him about two certain "children" in his future (don't worry.. they're not his out of wedlock or anything..) and he soon learns about a murder of a young girl that took place years ago in the "Horror House" ride at Joyland.
Devin then meets one of these "children," Mike Ross, and learns a whole lot. Mike is a disabled kid, who's quite interesting and very special, and ends up teaching Devin a thing or two about life. And, he meets Mike's hot mom, Annie. (Who's like ten years older than him...viewer discretion is advised>> don't say I didn't warn ya...).
And then bad things happen, but somebody may or may not save the day.
The End.

Is it just me, or does Stephen King like have a deep and troubled psychological connection with carnival things? (I.e, Clowns, Rides, Fun) He probably does. However, he does really love this concept of contrasting this utter darkness/unhappiness/ morbidity of death with the anxious feeling of expectation one gets on a carnival ride. I mean after all, if anyone has read It, or seen the movie at least- you know the incredibly uneasiness that creeps up into you after seeing a killer clown hunt down children every thirty years (sidenote: absolutely impeccable casting of Tim Curry for that role). But anyway, it's this incredibly contrastive connection between 'bad' and 'good' that totally makes you want to keep your head in the book, and it honestly reveals such an important message: there is some bad in good things (how Zen of Sir King).

As for the plot of Joyland, I found it reminiscent to SK's Cycle of the Werewolf (Silver Bullet), and some nuances of The Shining were most definitely in there. The whole psychological aspect of the characters is super intriguing, for there is (like The Shining) conflict over certain characters who have "the sight," and others who don't have the ability to "see" anything at all. I always liked this sort of dynamic, because by the end of the tale, you get to see which character ends up progressing more than the other. Like, does having a "psychic sight" enable or disable wisdom? Or is it better to not have it? I mean, after all, ignorance is bliss.

As for Joyland's likeness to Cycle of the Werewolf (aka Silver Bullet), Mike Ross is totally the Marty Coslaw of this book (protagonist in SK's Cycle of the Werewolf/ Silver Bullet). Both kids are absolutely insightful and driven, not to mention the fact that both happen to be in wheelchairs.

(WARNING: Baby Spoiler) Besides having "the sight," Mike is super ambitious and an overall angelic figure towards Devin. And via this "guardian angel" role that  Mike has, Devin sees not only a bit of self reflection, but also sees a persona that he aspires to be like (even though Mike is like 10 and Devin is a 19 year old). It seems that Devin pushes through for Mike---Mike is key to propelling Devin to continue on with life. Another great message; ultimately that>> life goes on after death.

One of the things I love about Stephen King is the fact that his themes constantly crossover throughout many of his different books. King remains true to the original "good" vs. "evil" but enhances these concepts through specific human plights and motivations (i.e disease, mental wants/needs). The relationships created between the characters are descriptive and quite poetic. But it is the horror that keeps these characters together. His characters must push through the horror to achieve harmony.
And, what is King's horror?

King's horror is the marriage of sanity and insanity.
The disorder and order of psyche, the mental needs versus the mental wants. Mostly, his horror reveals to us that the worst enemy that we face is ourselves.

Devin learns this lesson throughout his experiences at Joyland, and is able to overcome this obstacle through his relationship with Mike.

Joyland was an incredible read, I highly recommend it to any mystery lovers.

Because we LOVE Fashion Week & FNO

Created by the fabulous Anna Wintour [Editor of Vogue Magazine] and the Diane Von Furstenberg, FNO or Fashion's Night Out has been one of the most popular, fun, and fashionable events in the history of the commercial fashion world as we know it today. It is traditionally the first night of Spring | Summer Fashion Week (held the first week of September) and allows for participating stores to have sales, give away free merchandise, and host parties for designers/ celebrities to come and celebrate the beginning of fashion week.

According to the FNO's Official Website, the purpose of FNO is "to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence, and boost the industry's economy." It is not only held in NYC (it's origin) but has also expanded to other cities that have their own fashion weeks (i.e Washington D.C).

Unfortunately, according to sources such as Rolling Stone Magazine, FNO in the US has been put on "hiatus," in effort to "redirect" the profit made to other "priorities"> as Rolling Stone puts it.

Here's where we and you guys come in. As college students in NYC and now religious attendees and lovers of Fashion Week in NYC, my friends and I feel very strongly about the cancellation of this traditional NYFW event. One of my best friends, Lilly, has created a petition to bring back FNO for the US in Fall 2013.

Whether you appreciate fashion, wear fashionable things, or love fashion with all your heart like we do, please take the time to sign this petition to help bring back this event.

So for the sake of beautiful Dolce and Gabbana jackets, Oscar de la Renta gowns, Diane Von Furstenberg prints, and all of the allure and wonderment that NYFW has to offer, please consider signing and spreading the word.

I can feel the Mac blood in me run cold, as I must admit I stopped using Mac's MSF in Medium Plus. That powder has been my favorite face powder for years, but alas, as the world progresses, so does my skin apparently. I will probably still purchase Mac's MSF in Medium Plus for some occasions / when I do makeup on others, however I've truly found a better powder that I've been absolutely loving: Makeup Forever's Pro> Finish Powder in #163.

This is a miracle product for oily skin. Now, I've never really had oily skin until about a few months ago, when I noticed a lot more shine on my face throughout the day. As it turns out, just as anything else, skin changes. So as a warning, you may not always have dry | oily skin your entire life.

The Pro> Finish powder is loose and matte when applied to the face alone, but can have a dewy (almost coverage-like) finish when mixed with a mixing medium or water.

I simply love the packaging as well, for it comes with a compact mirror as well as a flat foundation sponge (very user-friendly if you don't have specific makeup brushes).

I personally like to apply this loosely with a Sephora #50 Face Brush! I find it's the easier using a big brush when setting one's tinted moisturizer/ foundation/ concealer (whatever you use!).

This powder is completely matte, and I think that's what makes me love it the most. It helps you maintain clear-looking, beautiful skin throughout the day. I can definitely say, I've noticed a change in the way my makeup wears whilst daily use. It's quite long lasting.

I would most definitely recommend this product for all of you makeup connoisseurs! (#163 is my shade> for reference)
